“Can you imagine not being able to read a newspaper, a road sign or directions on a bottle of medication? Sadly, this is a reality faced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in remote communities today.”
– Karen Williams, Executive Director, ILF
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), a national not-for-profit charity focussed on improving literacy levels in very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
"Only a quarter of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 91 per cent for non-Indigenous students, according to the 2016 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
The situation is improving but there is still a long way to go and the challenges are immense.
Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote communities don’t have many, if any, books. Most of the remote communities that we work with report there are less than five books in family homes.
Our approach to raising literacy levels starts at a community level with Book Supply. Appropriate quality books are gifted to organisations operating in remote communities.
Our Book Buzz program in a WA community shows how giving children under five the right books in their own language, develops early literacy skills. Read more about the Book Buzz program." - Indigenous Literacy Foundation www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au

I am a primary school teacher by trade and education is something I hold very dear to my heart. I have always made a concerted effort to pay kindness forward with the selling of my Bella & Reg pendants. In 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my family and I were shown much kindness by family, friends and strangers. Since then, my little family have tried hard to extend this same kindness to others and now my aim is to help promote education in remote Indigenous communities. $1 from each pendant sold will be donated by me to help buy reading books for Indigenous children living in remote areas. Every $25 will be donated to ILF and will buy up to four books for an Indigenous child living in a remote community .

Thank you for supporting my art, our talented Indigenous artists, and Indigenous children's right to an education.
